Google is developing a significant data center campus on a 403-acre site in Hermantown, Minnesota, a suburb of Duluth. The project, approved by the Hermantown City Council in October 2025, is planned to include up to four data center buildings. The location was chosen for its climate conducive to energy-efficient cooling, a resilient power grid, and a motivated workforce.
Google has entered into an electric service agreement with Minnesota Power to develop 700MW of clean energy resources, comprising 300MW of wind power and 400MW of battery storage capacity. This collaboration aims to facilitate the expansion of clean energy and battery storage while contributing to local energy affordability. Google will fund all necessary infrastructure for the development. Construction is anticipated to be completed within five to 10 years.
